The Topic Of My Blog... Yes or No?

Hi All,

Firstly, I signed up here as it looks like there is wealth of knowledge that could really help me out.

Anyway, I have registered a domain called ‘The Web Evolved’. The idea was going to be to create a blog where by I update daily/every other day with the cool things I find around the net.

Going from web browsers, through to firefox add-ons, little netbooks, or fun applications for windows XP etc.

I’m not trying to setup a “this is the number one place to find everything” I just want to share the experiences I have, of around the net! As there is a hell of a lot more out there than just Google, Youtube and Facebook. Hence – The Web Evolved!

Anyway… I have since had a thought – I’m not necessarily in this “Blog business” to make any money (would be nice, but I’m not targeting it at that), I just want to (as explained above) share my experience of what I find on the net on a daily basis.. However, I just want to know whether you think there are already 1,000,000 +1 other websites that do exactly that…

If there are, whilst it may be fun for me to do… no-one would want to read it, or would they? Would you also suggest having it as a read-only blog where people can leave comments, or look at turning it into a fully fledged community website where people can exchange Xbox Live! Gamertags, or PS3 IDs, Windows ID, Forums etc…

Now… I currently use Joomla to manage my websites, do any of you use this, or are you all Wordpress people?

Any other comments/tips etc you would like to suggest would be appreciated!

Hello, I think it's a good idea for a blog. While there may be other sites that do something similar, they won't produce the same results that you will. As long as the blog has a variety of unique content that can't be found anywhere else, it's worth the effort, I think.

I've been working on a video website for a short while, and I try to do just that--act as a filter and post just what I feel is worth watching/knowing about. If you like, you can check it out here.

So, would you all recomend Wordpress? Is it totally free and how adaptable (such as customising looks etc) is it?

Like many things we all do, your idea is ambitious. I think it's a good idea, and I think it can/will work, IF a) you are completely dedicated to it, b) you post new content regularly, and consistently for months (and beyond), c) you do the right things to attract visitors and maybe get a bit of a loyal following. It might also help if you compile a list of sites which you can visit daily to get new info, like WebProNews | eBusiness News, Search News, and Business Videos and ZDNet: Tech News, Blogs and White Papers for IT Professionals - just two examples that came to mind, but it depends on what specific angle you want to take.

The best thing to do is target people who are bored in work, and similar blogs, hopefully to get ideas (with linkbacks) etc.

And Wordpress is totally free (bar domain & hosting costs). For any hugely successful blog, you would need it.

I think it sounds like a good idea. I've never used Wordpress so I can't comment on that part of it. I use Blogger for one of my blogs and I love it. Have you looked at that? For my other blog I purchased a domain through GoDaddy.com and use their Quick Blogast software. It's great. It costs a bit of money, but it's really easy, and they offer 24-7 support which is good for people like me who have 850 questions when setting up sites from scratch like I did - lol

Regarding WordPress - * am I able to customise the look/feel of it?
* I will not just want it to be a blog down the centre of the page, with the archives on the right. I may want a few permanent links to content (maybe a couple of reviews etc, that will separate links and will not need to be searched for).

Yes. Wordpress can be customised (almost) to however you want

I like the idea of your blog, though it is a little bit of an overworked niche. It might be hard to get your posts high in the Google Search results because there are so many other high PR blogs about the same or similar thing.

I do agree with you Nathan, however - I have already paid for the domain name quite some time ago and really want to do something with it. This is the most fitting I can see right now....
