Since I just started a new web hosting review site I have been doing a lot of research about blog hosting. I have been putting out surveys and finding out who is hosting their blog where I'm finding that there are many bloggers out there not taking advantage of the benefits of hosting their own blogs on their own domains. Here's some of the reasons for getting off of the free blogging platforms like Blogger and Wordpress and hosting your own. 1. If you own your own domain you control your own destiny Otherwise your blog is just a little piece of the big guys. 2. You can sell your blog for profit some day You can't sell what you can't own + see #1 above. 3. More advertising options are available if you own your own blog Wordpress hosted and blogger blogs tell you what ads are ok and what ones are not, tomorrow maybe they will get even more restrictive. Plus more advertising scripts and widgets are available on a self hosted Wordpress blog. 4. Better search engine optimization results The search engines are going to find you lots easier if your keyword is in your primary doman name rather than trailing behind someone elses name. 5. Affiliate Programs To Monotize Your Blog Many affiliate programs do not approve blogger blogs etc. 6. Personalized email addresses to match your domain Most hosting accounts come with free email addresses and it looks lots more pro than a Gmail one. 7. Make it easier for your friends to find you A short easier to remember domain name is way easier to explain to your fiends and customers where to find your blog. I'm sure there are a lot more reasons to host your own blog, feel free to add your own to the mix or let me know the reasons that this may not be true for you. I know it is a big leap of faith that your blogging efforts could earn you enough to pay for your own hosting account. Heck, can you really make more than $5-$8 a month from your blog? (the average monthly hosting fee) If the answer is yes then I think it may be time to get off of the free blog hosting platforms and be in controll of your own blogs destiny and start making some real money. About a year ago I was in the same boat as most of you, I took the plunge, bought my own domain name and a hosting plan and now make about $500/mo from people clicking on my coupon code ads. And I spend less than 5-8 hours a week putting new ads up and promoting my site. If you need any advice or help in setting up a Wordpress blog in your own hosting account let me know. And Rob here at Bloggeries has a great deal on Hostgator web hosting that he'll even give you $20 back if you sign up through his link: Rob's Hostgator Deal If you would like to share your web hosting experiences, good or bad and get a link back to your blog you can add your hosting review here: Rate Your Web Host Last edited by Shopping4Coupons; September 27th, 2008 at 11:39 PM.. |
