One of the first things which you need to learn is how to market you site, that is the key to getting traffic. Without knowing how to market you site correctly, you will be spinning your wheels most of the time.
It is dependent on knowledge and the amount of time you spend working on your site. If you are lucky and find someone who has knowledge and will share it with you, then you can learn much quicker.

Page content is a must, and you site must offer something which people are interested in. I would worry about page content, SEO, directory submissions, article directory submissions, participating in forums and social networks first.

As far as how much traffic you should have, I would set my traffic goals on my competitors. Then go after it.

I have put a lot of work into it. I post good fresh articles on it. I post at forums and spend a lot of time building links. I sumit articles to article sites, comment on related blogs and submit to directories.
I find that Feedburner helps a lot.
I also bought a few good ads

I actually found it more difficult to get traffic from the search engines than all the other suggested ways.. Of course that's where seo, pagerank and links etc all come into play. takes time. And honestly I didnt spend a lot of time at the start on that.
