Great article. It really does boil down to marketing - getting people to read your content, and thinking it's good enough to link to. It's not just about throwing your link out wherever you can get it. At some point, it goes back to the old saying "Quality, not quantity".

I think that content promotion is much more valuable. People don't follow links very often simply because there are so many and so many that lead to worthless places. Visitors would rather type search terms into Google and let it find the results they want. Trying to locate a good site by links is more work and takes much longer.
