I was just wondering, is it better to have a random topic blog or a set in stone, concrete topic blog ? Which one does better as far as traffic is concerned? And, what are some good topics for a one topic blog ?

My advice to you is to pick a well-defined topic for your blog. Random doesn't get you anywhere. Seriously, check it out yourself: search on Google for any niche keyword. All the top 10 sites have a focus, they generally don't post anything except stuff about that niche. As for good topics, I'd suggest just blog about what you are passionate about. And I mean real passionate about. Real passion means you can blog about that topic for ages, no matter if you're earning money or not. If you're passionate about cars, blog about them. Passionate about football? Blog it... Just make sure that there are enough people passionate about that topic...

Realistically I don't think you should try to be everything to everyone. There is simply no way you can cover everything better than everyone. Since the Web is so connected people often jump blog to blog to find what different people have to say about different topics. I think the best advice is now as it always has been; write about something you're passionate about and really genuinely like / have expert knowledge on. Best of luck,

How many magazines, tv shows, documentaries or books have no focus whatsoever? I think that is your answer. |

Pick a category, and then discuss topics within that category. That's what DD does. I think it's all about what you can get away with. Pretty much anything can relate to anything if you do it right!

I'd say pick a niche you have a passion about and blog about it. Just a random web journal may have been cool in 2006, but now with the competition and the millions of blogs out there, I would imagine it being very hard to get readers unless you are just a totally enthralling person who does amazing things at random - and then blogs about them.

| I can't seem to think of any shows that are without a topic, except talk shows and those shows generally have thousands of dollars to spend on advertising etc.

Yep, I have to agree that you need a topic of some sort. Even if you're writing a personal diary about your life and all the stories are about random things that happen to you, that's still your topic and it'd be out of place for you to be trying to cover techincal web analyses and mummies in ancient Egypt. What do you love? What do you 'want' to write about? Start there and figure it out as you go.

I'd only read a website that had rambling thoughts if 1) the person was my friend, or 2) the person was famous.

if your blog is personal diary based, than you can attract people if your life is existing in most peopel's eyes and you can post your random minds on your blog. If your blog is information-based, then of course, topic-based is appropriate. Personal opinion. :-) |
