Permalinks After Start of Blog

I've never got my permalinks to work, but it seems from some of my reading that it has to be set up before you start posting... that if you try to do it after you have posts it won't work. Can anyone help in getting them to work even though posts are already there?

You can switch it I'm pretty sure. Just links to old posts won't work I *BELIEVE* but they will have no URL's. IF you are going to do it the sooner the better. How new is your blog?

Neither one have very much on them - New Page 1 and Mom's Write Stuff

That's what I was afraid of, there's no way to get them to work now. (?) They should fix that somehow.

They work now it's just the old links don't but who cares unless you had tones of links to those pages. The engines will revisit and reindex your new stuff.

Things that NEED to be done are always best done early as possible. You don't NEED to do it but I think it's worth it.

If you turn pemalinks on, your old links will still work (the ?p=xxx) ones. You can't go the other way though. If you turn permalinks off, any "pretty URLs" will go straight to your "Page Not Found" Page.

One option is a plugin called Redirection (Redirection - Manage 301 redirections without modifying Apache | Urban Giraffe) which lets you control exactly how 404s are handled so that you can move pages from one place to another.

I've seen a plugin which automatically redirects the old URLs to the new relevant ones somewhere, but shame on me, can't remember it. You can probably find by searching for it.

It's not what OwenCutajar mentioned, but guess it has a similar mechanism..
