Default Questions about WordPress Hosting

Anyone familiar with Yahoo's wordpress hosting?

Will I be able to install custom themes and plugins? I'm a newbie when it comes to hosting + wordpress so I was wondering exactly how much control I have of wordpress before I purchase any wordpress hosting.

For other non-Yahoo wordpress hosts, do you have control to install plugins and themes?

Thanks!

You have total control on Wordpress REGARDLESS of host. Don't chose a host based on wordpress all major ones work the same.

Thanks for your quick response.

I signed up to a free wordpress host called blogetery as a test. They have existing templates, but I cannot add a new themes or modify the CSS. I know in the wordpress.com's free hosting, you can make modifications to the CSS if you pay, but I don't think you can add new plugins or themes.

For a host where you have to pay (such as Yahoo), will I be able to modify the CSS, add new wordpress themes, add new plugins, add new widgets, etc?

Just get some kick a$$ hosting like Hostgator Once you start one blog or website, you WILL want to have more. Hostgator is perfect for that. Ask Rob about HostGator, he can help you out! :P

If you host your own site, you can make modifications, and upload any plugins or widgets that you wish to add to your site. You'll either use your own FTP program, or use the one that comes with the host's Cpanel (most host providers have this capability). You'll also have access to other tools such as backup/restore and Web analytics, if these are interesting to you.

I have been using Hostgator for about a year. The reason I chose them is the 24/7 telephone support. The support has been very good, and uptime also very good. There were a couple of outages recently due to a PHP software upgrade. But all in all, very reliable.

Hosting wordpress with yahoo is tricky (should be avoided). You don't have an .htaccess file and setting file permissions is a @#$%^&*, and there are a few other restrictions that off hand i cant recall.

Best of luck

P.S Host Gator is excellent

Kirby - You'll be able to modify ANY of those on any good host. Personally I stay away from Yahoo, Godaddy etc. Hosting IS NOT their business. I do use godaddy for domain reg though... Go with a hosting specialist.

@sukosaki - thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into host gator
@richrf - I was hoping that Yahoo would give me the complete control of my files (as I would expect)
@PaulR - thanks for the heads up
@Bloggeries - I would have expected Yahoo to be quite good since they have unlimited space, unlimited transfer, and is reliable (as stated here) and I would have thought that if Wordpress.com recommended it as a host, it would be easy to set up and configure...but maybe not?

Seems like there's enough people recommending me not to use Yahoo, so I'll try looking at host gator.

Thanks everyone

I would think the exact opposite if a host claimed to offer "unlimited" space and bandwidth. There's no such thing. I would agree with the others and go with a real host like HostGator. I tend to avoid companies such as Yahoo and GoDaddy for hosting because they have very strange restrictions like some mentioned above.
