I find the following strategies useful (for me anyways):
1) Find potential uses of certain keywords - e.g. there is a model called Leah Dizon who is mega popular. It's probably impossible for me to ever rank high with her name alone, so I go for an alternate use like "Leah Dizon Photobook", which will land me on the second page (and people do search for it!).

2) Try to get a niche on keywords - e.g. there is a Japanese band called Monkey Majik, who are popular, but not a whole lot of websites dedicated to them. I'm currently the 3rd result for "Monkey Majik Lyrics" or 1st/2nd page for "Monkey Majik" because I invested time in getting those keywords

3) I tend use keywords multiple times (almost approaching spamming) in my posts that sometimes can land 1st page results...although if Google detects spamming it'll probably punish you severely

I haven't read any SEO techniques for keywords...but that's my two cents
