Just make sure to put closing tags on things like lists and images. I found that was the biggest problem I had.

Being compliant is more a browser issue than a Google issue.

Most of the times, I have observed that the validation problems are there because of missing ALT tags in IMG tags and missing closing /> brackets.

to my know, when there is a missing code or script in our web, it's not good for goolge crawls our website. That's why most of theme or website template use validation to make them better. But when I make a wordpress theme, I use XHTML and CSS validation for my theme. That's all I know, because I'm not a webmaster LOL
