Try asking open-ended questions at the end of your post. Also, make sure you have a signature that links back to your blog.

Ask a question as the title of your post. That will inspire your reader thinking while they are reading your post. Then they will want to give their opinion.
Example: Where Do You Think Video Blogging Will Be in 2 Years?

1. Ask question
2. Write something controversial 3. Do a giveaway that focuses on comments. I am doing this now on Moolanomy -- $50 gift certificate for one commenter at the end of April. :-) 4. Write something completely wrong -- people likes to correct other people, but I don't recommend this.

I've noticed a few things about the posts I write that seem to generate the most comments.
1. controversy. If I write about dog euthanasia or pet's overdosing on illegal drugs I get comments. 2. Kittens. If there's a picture of a kitten, someone will comment. Without fail.

Reply to the comments that you receive and provide the option for your commentators to subscribe to future comments. Also, using the Top Commentator plugin is inspiring as well because it gives your commentators a prominent link back to their blog.
