Default Site Trackers, Make Public or Private?

I've noticed some sites make their trackers public (e.g. Sitemeter and Extreme Tracker), which will show information such as referrals and search engine keywords.

Although it's great information if you are trying to get affiliates/link exchange, is showing referrals and search engine keywords giving away too much information to your competitors? Alternatively, you could just set up a pure HTML based tracker which won't track referrals or search engine keywords if you just want to show unique visitors and hits.

I personally look at public trackers for sites that I "compete" against to see what keywords and referrals are giving them so much traffic and then attempt to do the same.

Any thoughts? Or am I just being evil?

Use invisibles!

I don't see any point in letting anyone into the "back" of your site.

When selling links or advertisement, create a limited account for accessing the stats and place it on your advertise page. (Google Analytics has that option, but also WordPress' stats plugin.

I don't see the point either. I guess it's a nice ego stroke to show off what you can do, but it's not worth it in my opinion.

Granting access to Google analytics is a good idea. I forgot that option existed

I think we better let the tracker keep in the closet, coz it is not wised to appeal your site traffic info to the public...Just my 2 cents opinion
