If you have a Wordpress blog you can turn on the "Akismet" plug-in and it will usually block most spam comments. If you have a Blogger blog you can set it up that you have to approve comments before they are posted. I personally like "Do Follow" blogs. I would like to gain backlinks, so I give other people the opportunity to gain backlinks from my blog.

The best course of action would be to switch to Dofollow and announce it on your blog, but keep schtum on forums like DP. There people actively search the forum to comment on dofollow blogs.

You'll get spammers no matter what. Turning on do follow is a nice gesture to your readers, and may entice some comments out of them.

Run a good spam filter (e.g. Akismet), and be fairly strict about the sort of comments you approve. For example, if you approve someone who says "Nice post, thanks for it", then you'll get more of the same.

Dofollow ===> I recommend it. It doesn't hurt you at all and rewards your readers, so why not?

Ok here is the single proble with it....

If you are going to use the 'dofollow' it is important to do a site link audit every once in a while. You see, Google may not penalize for who links to you, but they certainly will for whom YOU link to...

So, if over time, a page you linked to has been redirected (by shady types) or the domain purchased etc... you can unwittingly be linking to bad neighbourhoods from a post you made a year ago.

While I dofollow links, I occasionally run tools such as LinkSlueth through the site to look for anamolies... as I do with the Bad Neghbourhood checking tool.

This is really the only risk of using dofollow (unless yer doing pay per post kinda stuff...always 'nofollow' those).

You still need to clean out askimet periodically, because teh span just keeps comming. It seems the spam of the month is poker and casino flavor.

With a do-follow blog you might get more junk comments from other bloggers, eg "Nice post and interesting point of view" that aren't really much at all, excxept a link bakc to them. Whether you choose to allow those sorts of comments or not is up to you.
