5 images isn't really spamming if you spread it out. I typically go for 3, but have done as much as five in my prime

I think it's important to have a picture for every three paragraphs (not short) of text that you have. Rule of thumb.

but it was a really long tutorial and the pictures were needed for examples

And of course nice images are making the blog cutier.
