Default The Way Keyword Spammers See It

In my latest post (Rubbish Commenter Update #2 - I know, cheap plug), I talked about some of the terribly spammy comments left by some people on what was quite a personal post for me.

Anyway, I got another comment from a keyword spammer, who tried to justify his actions:
Hey even if you were listed on a dofollow blog list…that would mean traffic (as I click around sites), and traffic means ad revenue =)
As he commented with a spammy nickname, I deleted his comment, but what do you think? Do you think recieving these comments actually adds anything to blogs? Do you believe what "San Diego Servers", as he calls himself is saying, that even adding one visitor could give me more ad revenue (even if they contribute nothing)?

Finally, where do you draw the line? I've started doing something similar with Retro Garden, though commenting as "Retro Garden" I justify (I only comment on gaming/retro blogs, and it's the brand I'm pushing with it), but am I just as bad as the people I block?

Depends how good the comment is. If the commenter adds something relevant and useful to the post, or has a history of commenting on the blog, I don't mind related keywords used as the anchor text - Blogging Tips or Make Money Online is fine with me. If it's a new commenter without a useful post, I delete the comment entirely or remove all links and give him a crap anchor text

Also depends on relevance. If someone puts a comment that is totally unrelated and I KNOW that it's just for a link... I often delete it unless it's spectacular. These spammers spend TIME thinking of cheap canned comments that will pass a hand test. Don't let them pass yours

The often are commenting for the first times. I don't like "Blogging Tips" (unless they're from bloggingtips.com or something), so they usually get spammed and marked down. Say if you were to comment on my blog as "The University Kid" - I would not have a problem with. If you commented "Make Money Online with The University Kid", then I'd probably delete it. No offence, just can't make exceptions

And a word of warning for crap anchor text - I used to give them "A Sh** Website" for my anchor text, but then it backfired as I went shooting up the SERPS for "A Sh** Website" :S

Sometimes they amusingly miss the point of the post. One such case where I posted a year of being single and they commented "Congratulations"

(I've never been married, so wouldn't know much about that)

Depends what your website name is, eh.

If you're commenting on a make money online blog, and your website is FreePhoneCards.com and you use your anchor text as Free Phone Cards, for me that is surely going to be changed or deleted, as irrelevant backlinks out of a blog (especially ones that pass on the link juice) can hurt your SERPs

Nah, I think that spam comments generally deter more users/readers than they could ever draw to your website through linking. Unless of course, it is one of the few few few exceptions where you have a diamond in the rough keyword

I always use my name as Ferox, unless I'm linking to the corollax blog. This is partly because I want to be a genuine person (I only comment if I have something to say), and partly because if I say anything about an animal, I need the link to my vet student blog to back up what credibility I have.
