Self-hosted wordpress blogs allow ads. In fact, there are many ways to add ads. Take a look at a snapshot below where you can add almost any kinds of ads to you wordpress blog within the control panel (or dashboard) of wordpress (through feeds or by adding raw ad codes):

Also, this free 24-page ebook (along with 2 extra goodies - click on the link that says CARP) shows you how you can add your Amazon affiliate ads to your Wordpress' sidebar or to any part of your self-hosted wordpress blog. Just don't be fooled by the blog title.

Hosting and how to install wordpress
I placed some video tutorials here complete with info on how to activate your domain and set up wordpress.

Alternate no-brainer way of installing wordpress

A lot of great feedback on here. I use blogger right now. If I decide to switch it from the free blogspot web address to buying a domain name, will blogger still host my site for free?

starksmom2, your answer is yes, all you have to do is add a redirect to your domain name.

You are only buying a domain name, not the webhosting. What blogger will be hosting is yourname.blogspot.com

Your www.yourdomain.com can be redirected to yourname.blogspot.com (any links within yourname.blogspot.com will show up as links within yourname.blogspot.com ).

For me, the only real difference between blogger or wordpress is whether you are letting them host it or you are hosting it on your own url. If you are looking for a free host, I would go with blogger (since you can make money off of it and it is easy to use/customize). If you want to put it on your own domain, then wordpress is the way to go. Beyond that, they both seem to have the same functionality in terms of plugins, etc.

I agree with with Flashgordon on the part of the webhosting. I have not gone into research about their plugins though. Is there a directory for Blogger's plugins or add-ons?

Since I am not using Blogger and many are, can anyone tell me if you're able to customise your comments page in Blogger?
