Default Domain question

Hey guys, which site did you guys use to sign up for your .com domain? Are there sites that are cheaper than others, or more secure?

Also, how does it exactly work. Say I get something like www.hedgeagainstspeculation.com...now does that just redirect me to Hedge Against Speculation I hear there is a difference between blogger and wordpress, and it has to do with the domain redirecting?

If you use Blogger, you'll have to buy a domain and have it redirected to your blogger site.

If you use Wordpress, you can do the same or you can install wordpress on a host and you wouldn't have to do any redirecting.

I had used eNom.com to register mine, but you can do it through your host company if you want to go that route. My hosting company let's you register a domain name for free when you have your hosting with them. It's 6.95/month US for 2yr contract. You get tons of space and bandwidth, in the TB (more than GB). Web hosting provider - Bluehost.com - domain hosting - PHP Hosting - cheap web hosting - Frontpage Hosting E-Commerce Web Hosting Bluehost

I bought my domain and am using one.com (who advertise all over these kind of sites) to host my site. They charge £10 for a years hosting uncluding buying the domain name. Pretty good deal and the control panel to host your site is very user friendly.

Installing Wordpress on your site is also incredibly easy.

For $10 hosting+domain, I am sure the bandwidth is pretty limited. Care to find out and share with us? For personal use, should be a very good deal, though

I thought I saw even cheaper domains before...like 7.99 or I saw something like 1.99 for the first year? Am I missing something here...it would be pretty bad if the bandwidth was low.

This might be a stupid question, but does blogger or wordpress have bandwidth? If not, then the domain`s bandwidth shouldn`t have any affect, right?

I'd go with GODADDY.COM.

Be weary of ones that offer STUPID low fees first year. CHeck the 2nd year fee. Then check the cost to transfer. Often they will try and trap you in with one cheap start cost but you pay more over time...

If you're serious and you seem it; register a domain, get some cheaper hosting ~5$ a month and make the switch to WP asap.

I will definately switch over to WP. After joining this forum, my blog seems pretty pathetic.

I also will be getting a domain, I was just looking at GODADDY.com as well...what`s this transfer cost you speak about though? Will I be needing it? Also, why do I need a host?

Thanks for all the help guys, I`m pretty new at this.

Godaddy.com is great. I use it.

Basically registering a domain is like getting a title to virtual real estate...

Now you need somewhere to HOST your real estate? That's where a web host comes in. For starters you can go very cheap. ~5$ a month. One day (Hopefully) you will get SO MUCH traffic you need to upgrade. It's a happy / sad day.

Some places have like a fee if you want to transfer away from their registrar.

I wouldn't say your blog is pathetic. You're new. We were all new once. In fact most new people started on blogger or other free services.

Ultimately it's YOUR content so why not OWN it? (The logic behind going Wordpress self hosted). Furthermore Wordpress has WAY more plugins, free themes, blah blah blah.

You're on the right track and we're here for you every step of the way!

I hope I`m reading your reply correctly...

So I can`t use the .com simply as a redirection and keep "hosting" my blog on say WP?
