Silly question this...
I want a top commenter widget, but I don't want to display it on my blog. I want to know the results, without counting the comments manually, but don't want my blog readers to see it. Is this possible? The intention is to reward top commenters with free ads, but not to encourage people commenting "nice post" on every bloggery just to bump their stats. Also, I don't want to formally announce anywhere that comments = free ads or more comments = higher up free ads. I'm thinking this would make it easier for me to retain editorial control on who gets the free ad invites.

How I see it in my head at the moment is my sidebar is to become deluxe blogroll for frequent readers and commenters.
To the right of a 125x125 ad for their blog/site, we put a 10-30 word synopis for it. Above the synopsis will be the name they comment under (probably in a bold font), so readers know who is who. I'm not particulary interested in monetizing my site at the moment, a downside of this is that with no design work of my own, you will see that asides from an entrecard widget, the whole site currently looks quite plain. I like this idea as it rewards regulars, and adds a splash of colour to my blog. Also, it gives a browser a bit of a taste as to what a link might contain (and so hopefully, lots more clicks)

I imagine a pimped up blogroll has been done many times before. (Although non illustrated lists seem to be predominant in the blogosphere)
If anyone knows of a user friendly widget/software/programme that makes designing such a thing easier, please give us a shout

You could use the standard Top Commentators Widget and only activate it when you want to see the tallies (and deactivate it after you've finished checking) - that should do what you want to, I think
