Ok, I have a quick question about images and copyright laws. I see a lot of bloggers seem to use photos that they get from another news story.
For instance, this blogger: Next Big Future: Large sheets of Carbon nanotubes produced Appears to have gotten the picture for that blog post, from this site: http://www.xconomy.com/2008/02/22/ne...bon-nanotubes/ Now why can he do that? Does he have to get permission from the original source of the picture? Or is he protected to use that picture under fair use laws? Or is it because he refers back to the original story in his blog post. That is what I am wondering, what etiquette/steps do you have to follow if you want to use a particular picture if you are a blogger? How can you find out if you can use a particular picture (besides getting it from places like wikimedia commons)? Thanks in advance for any help.

I had always wondered the same thing. Here is some information I just found that might help. There is a Q&A setup on the page, so search down the page for, "When can I borrow someone's images for my blog post?"

Yeah that one might be pushing the envelope a bit too much. Thanks for the U.S. blogging law post kiviniar. I will definitely need to take a look toward that and try to get my posts in order to make sure I am not violating any laws.

Basically copyright infringement is copyright infringement. However the web is RAMPANT with it and few have the funds to actually prosecute. Best is to use your own and if you have infringed on someone else try not to and if it's in the past and they contact you fix it.
Many places to get free photos now.
