Default What Effect Do Your Tags Have? (An example featuring pygmy marmosets in MMORPGs)

There's a growing buzz around the concept of MMORPG games you can play from a cell phone, and I've written about it before at LagORama. Well, on the off-chance I would find an appropriate image to use in a new story I wrote today, I went to Google Image Search and typed in "cellphone mmorpg".

Out of the first five images it returned, three of them were from me, ranking ahead of images at much more well-known sites (I placed first, fourth and fifth...second and third were images at Wired.com). Of course, the very first image returned by that search on google is this one:

(The website listed below that image is aqua.org, but click on it and see where it takes you...the original Blogger home for LagORama...this was also before I learned that hotlinking images on other people's servers is about as polite as throwing up on their child...I always host the images on my own site now, so I don't steal bandwidth from others...or even worse, supplant them in the SERPs.)

Long-time readers of my blog understand how an image of a pygmy marmoset wound up attached to cellphone MMORPGs in the SERPs. (Read the caption under the screenshot on this bloggerie...the image links to the pygmy marmoset pic.)

Sometimes, it's apparently not how big you are, it's how early you were.

Now, what can we learn from this? Several things:

1. You're attached to more things than you might be aware of with your blog.
2. You'd be amazed where traffic can come from...thanks to this bloggerie, I rank amazingly well according to Google's Webmaster Tools for the search term "Audabon Society".
3. Your tags are uber important! All of these search engine results came about specifically because of the tags on the bloggeries, back in the days when I had no clue that they should be targeted toward my audience, and not just "cute things to put in the tag field".

So eat your Wheaties, floss after every meal, and properly compose your tags, or one day you too may become a dismal failure, attracting bird watchers and fans of small marsupials to your video game blog.

Were you using alt and title descriptions when adding your images?

Congrats
