Do I ever have a good one today. I read A LOT online and it's rare that I find something like this which totally grabs my attention. Take a few minutes and read up on what these experts say on link development.

It's a long post. I can't say all I want to say here as it would be long also

I agree on most of the things they suggest. I just wish Matt Cutts himself gives us a detail instruction on link development

Most of the methods don't seem to be too direct link building. They are more like link batings. I think what Google did changed their views somewhat. No one talks about getting links from high PR page any more. It used to work but not any more.

Pleasure, take the time to read it one day when it's slow. It's long but worth it!

Hi,

Thanks for the article. It covers almost all of the topics I have come across in regards to link development.

In general, I do not pay much attention to link development anymore on my site. It is true, that natural link development helps SERP and visitor count, however, without good content, all of the work is for naught. So, given time and money constraints, I spend most of my time and money on trying to develop a better site, as opposed to link development.

I also think that Google is slowly migrating away from links as a way of measuring the popularity and quality of a website. Instead, I believe that they are, more and more, relying on actual traffic, visitor time, and ad conversion ratios, as the means for developing their internal SERP algorithms. I wrote a post on this subject, called Google, Google Analytics and The Changing Face of SEO. The post was heavily discussed on a couple of the SEO forums, and in general the members of those forums agreed with my general proposition.

As a result of my own efforts on my website, I have decided to put very little time and money effort in link development, and much more into content development and other forms of site marketing.

Thanks again for the article.

Rich

Good thinking Rich. If you build a site full of content that is useful for your visitors you're doing link building in the process as you're building something others will naturally link to.

I would have to agree with Rich on this - without the content then link building really doesn't do much. As for using actual traffic, visitor time, and ad conversion ratios this may work if Google has access to your data files, but how are they to know how long they spend on a site that has no ads and does not use Google Analytics? I do agree that backlinks is not the only factor Google uses in the algorithm.

Google Analytics is pretty pervasive nowadays as is the Google Toolbar. Two, excellent sources of information. Google owns Feedburner, and I am sure they have agreements with other analytics companies to gather data. They are pretty much all over the place nowadays, gathering information about traffic behavior. It is fundamental to their advertising platform and their ability to deliver performance to advertisers. Google doesn't have to be perfect, just much better than their competitors, and no competitor at this time has the traffic info that Google has.
