Interesting. I'd just been kind of random writing topics and had found a few that don't have a lot of competition, but also don't have a lot of searches.

Not a good combo for any site! Start finding some gems to drive traffic to the rest.

Random topics do tend to put people off. I had a random blog called vaughan's corner, I've closed it now though.

I shuold have specified - Random within the veterinary medicine niche. A parasite this week, bacteria next week, student life the next entry etc. Too much of one thing at once and it becomes a textbook instead of a blog.

Good article, Freediver has a nice blog there, I did take the time to read through some of his other material also..

Another way of finding low competition keywords in Google is to take notice of how many Pay Per Click ads that are on the right side.
The more ads you see, the more competition (paying at least) for the keywords you used in your search.

I bought wordtracker and I found that HIGH KEI TERMS in popular or even remote niches don't stay that way for long; EVERYONE who finds it targets it and if you check that exact same term 1-2 weeks later it's got a SUPER LOW KEI like under 10. Stick with ~middle of the road and you'll be fine. Think ... What would everyone do then do something different and yes; I also enjoy freediver's post on that blog I learnt a lot / got reminded of a lot. What I like most about it is that it has no FLUFF. I'm great at beefing up articles but when it comes to learning FACTS you want straight to the point which I find that blog delivers big in.
