Default Swapping to self-hosted from Blogger

I've got no problem with exporting to Wordpress (which is what I plan to use), but here's my question...

I've got my pr at 3, but it's on the blogspot.com url. I assume that I'll effectively start over when I swap to outside hosting with my own url (which I already have...it's currently redirecting to my blogspot.com address), but how painful is the process of rebuilding your trackbacks and pr?

I have nightmares about it.

I had no intention of ever doing anything other than free blogging (simply because I enjoy it), but am now regretting not starting up on my own domain to begin with.

Actually, I could probably have just said "new blogger sad story number 12" instead of that last paragraph, I know. Forgive me.

I know how you feel, as I also did that.
I did a post that maybe can help you.

With the PR is not clear. You will loose it and regain it after months.

Here's another post about how to use a custom domain with blogger and advantages and disadvantages of having a domain.

You're right, you'll lose the PR entirely, since all the existing backlinks will point to the blogspot URL.

That said, you can contact the owners of those links and ask them to update them to the new domain. Most site owners are willing to do that for a fellow blogger, and some directories allow you to edit the URL in your entry. If you have some backlinks in articles, see if you can edit those, too.

So don't give up the backlinks without a fight. Make an attempt to get most of them switched over once the new domain is up and running, and then you should see your PR transfer over at the next update.

Might want to just start a new blog all together and leave the blogspot.com blog there. Keep it updated a bit, maybe steal but rewrite a few posts from it if it is applicable.

Add a link on the old blog to the new one. As you post on your new self-hosted blog, maybe create a little excerpt post on the old blogspot blog and a trackback to the new one.

Seems like a lot of work to move everything over... let us know if you do how it went.

That's why I started self-hosted. It's just the smarter thing to do. Still, best of luck to you. I've got no experience in this stuff so listen to the other posters.

Ya, 301 redirects are the only way I know of to transfer PR from one domain to another, but since you wont have access to the .htaccess file for your your blog on blogger (which is needed for 301 redirects), you are out of luck ...
