Posting Images from own host files to blogs, forums etc.f

I've been contributing to some public blogs and forums lately, and some of them allow posting fairly large images (up to 800 px wide, in some cases), provided that they are on file and accessible from another host. I've been trying to insert images from the image files of my own website, on file with my host server. Can I do that, or do I have to upload the files to flickr or some other image hosting service first? If I can post images from my own host files, how do I do it?
