Default Should I split my blog in two?

I started my blog, TriathlonMD . com (apparently I'm not even allowed to give out an address yet) several months ago and have been met with mild success. The original idea was that I would talk about balancing the worlds of triathlon racing and medical school...

However, as time goes on, I find the blog increasingly divided, and I worry that it turns off potential readers. I fear that a triathlete might click to my blog and wonder why are there are posts discussing diseases and cartoons about being a med student. Or on the flip side, that a medical person might click through and wonder why there a pictures of a half naked man riding a bicycle with a funny helmet on.

I'm curious to get other's opinions about multi-genre blogs. Is it a good idea, or should I split it in two?

Thanks

Do you have enough content that could fill 2 separate blogs? Do you have enough time to keep up with both? Is there material that you would end up posting on both sites because it's relevant to both?

There are lots of things to consider about splitting them. If it's a "lifestyle" blog where you discuss multiple things, including triathlete and med school stuff, and you can balance them and intertwine them reasonably well, then leave it. If anything, you could even offer more than one RSS feed....so people could subscribe to *just* the medical stuff or athlete stuff separate.

I split my blog, and I regret it now, though I may well have more traffic as a result of the split. Before the split, about half my posts were about perfume, and about half were about food or gardening or writing or reading. So I split into a perfume blog and an "everything else" blog, and all was well for a while.

But then I started to slack off on posting, and my interest in perfume started to wane, and I started to post more personal stuff, but the people that I have comment conversations with, that I'd like to talk about those more personal posts with, are split between blogs. So it's messy. I'd rather have one blog, but if I combine them, I'm likely to lose some readers.

So for traffic, it might be a good idea. For blogging satisfaction, I'd suggest that you think long and hard before you do it.

Possibly you will get more traffic by splitting the blog... but you will work twice, not just the content but also the promotion.

If you have time and you think that can do it, go for it.

I feel this way about my one blog, it's based on my bucket list, but sometimes I go on a great hike or do something that I want to share but isn't on the list.

I would hope that some people don't care. And as of right now I only have 6 followers so I kind of figured it's not a big deal.

Plus I already have a more personal blog where I share my thoughts, and I feel like as long as that stuff isn't on it then I should be fine.

It depends entirely on your time available for blogging. I am all for separating unrelated topics. On your main blog you can still post a link to your [other] blog and vice versa; so that readers who are genuinely interested can read all your blogs.

I also have this issue! I write a parenting/Lifestyle blog but add in offers and discounts which I think is putting off my parenting readers. If I split them into two then I would have to updae both and I am not sure I have the time for two.
