I have been pinging at Pingoat, Ping-O-Matic, Feedburner, and Pingler. I do it by hand... just going to the site and entering my blog name. Some actually will not LET you ping too much. I think it does help. Sometimes I forget to do it, and don't worry about it too much.

Pinging is effective only for new blog which has poor crawling rate. If you have a blog with frequent visits of Google bot there is no need to ping...
