Is it necessary to have a profile picture or a profile? As I have it now, I have a "message from the Chairman," which is a message to readers in general: My blog is meant to be informative and somewhat formal. (As I can't post links, you will have to navigate to my page through the RSS link). |

I would say standing in a mirror, and posing with a camera isn't the best way to go for a blog picture, or something to similiar to that. A plain background, which features only you is definitely the best advice!

I don't see anything wrong with avatars/cartoons/etc to identify a blog/site. I don't see it as unprofessional even....there are plenty of people I follow that are anonymous and "brand" themselves with a picture that isn't of themselves.
