Blog directories are useless in my book. I've submitted my site to hundreds of them and then placed their banners on my site but haven't even received any traffic from them at all.

I kind of had the feeling they were useless. I think most traffic comes from participating in many websites and offering advice. People begin to like/trust you and will read your work...and if it's good, they'll tell others about your site as well. It would be nice if I could simply advertise my blog on a site that targets my main audience. I am sure it can be done, but not for free.

The only benefit of blog directories is if google indexes your link from the directory to your blog. If the directory is high enough PR and it is a do follow link then you may get some good PR juice to your blog and help you in SERPs. However, I won't expect human traffic from a directory, after all when was the last time you used one to find a website.
