I actually do not recommend Michella's strategies (mostly). Directory submission is often a waste of time - Google is smart enough to know what a link farm is. And leaving your blog link in a bunch of comments is often called spamming. Don't give away your precious content to others. Article submission is just giving your content away to aggregators. If you get a chance to guest blog on a high quality, similar niche, high PR blog, take that opportunity. But that's not the same thing as article submission. As for using social media - Yes follow all kind of real people who engage. Don't push links. Pushing links is spammy. You never know who may be interested in your content. Michella's advice was probably what worked 5 years ago. Google has caught up to 2011.

I used to get traffic from other similar blogs where I leave good comments. I also create trackbacks by referring other blog posts in my post which is also a great way to generate traffic just like the comments. Among the social networks I see Stumbling the post generates stead stream of traffic than any social traffic.
