What does it mean if I'm getting traffic from sites I've never heard of? Like Pingywebedition.somee.com and blogged.com. What are these sites and how do they hear about me?

Both of those are from pings. Either you or a site you are listed in recently pinged your blog. A lot of blog host sites automatically ping your blog also. I am not trying to be insulting, but if you dont know what pinging is, it is basically letting certain sites know you have made updates. It updates the info where you are listed, Search Engines, Blog Host Sites etc... By the way you should ping your blog periodically. New post, changes etc.... My favorite ping site is pingler.com. Just add your blog title, blog URL and it pings numerous very important places for you with one click of the mouse. Dont be fooled by the pingler signup option. No need to. Just add info and click.
