What do you think makes a blog successful?

What are your standards of success for a blog? Readership? Quality? Is there a relationship between readership and quality?

I think good quality blogs will make the readers come with time. If you make it interesting, and it is a topic that you truly love and are passionate about, your writing will reflect that. Your reads will notice that, and with time you will get more.

I could be wrong, my blog is far from successful, but that's just the vibe I get from reading other people's blogs.

Frequently updated unique quality content. I'm sick of reading the same content reused by all the people, so finding someone who's actually got something to say is my goal.

Yes, most up to date quality content which most people are interested in will make the blog site a success.

When we visit some sites, we can see the content is much out of date and the people adds out of subject posts, which will make the site less interesting..

Hmmm... Tough one but if I have to choose, it would be number of subscribers. Readers and visitors may come across your blog (and never come back) but if they took the trouble to subscribe (via RSS, email or etc.), it's an indication that your blog means something to them.

Content is pretty high on the list for me. Regardless of how many subscribers are reading your blog or how much money it is making, for me if the content is a success the others should come. Content starts good discussions.

Quality content posted regularly is at the top of my list. Even if it's just a plain blog without any plugins, I'd still read it if the content is very engaging.

Blogs that teach - i.e. How to... with good content, diagrams, examples, and latest software, freeware. Also that they constantly update with new tutorials.

Very interesting question. I think most people are wrong when assuming without any doubt that quality brings readership. If by quality we understand relevant content, new ideas, structured information and, the most most important aspect of all, diligent insights into today's interests, then quality may and will endorse readership. This proves that no matter how much quality you provide, without the adequate context your efforts are futile.
