So would a blog about my rants in life be a good idea?

| Maybe yes. Maybe no. Just my 2 cents, but unless you've got a niche to write about, I think it's harder to gather regular readers. But you really haven't said anything about why you're producing a blog, and who your intended audience is, and even very much about your subject matter. If a Hollywood celeb starts a blog, everyone would visit because people want to know about the day to day life and rants of a celeb. For those of us who are normal, ordinary folks, it's going to be harder to get people interested in your blog. People are naturally interested in themselves (but the human ego is so selfish) and not really others, unless you're a shiny celebrity. Btw, I think it CAN be done to create a general personal blog that has an audience, just think it's harder than having a niche. If you pick a niche ... cars, movies, knitting, yarn, cats, coffee, tea, furniture, clowns, ... what will happen is that other people who are interested in the same niche may find you because they ARE interested in that topic, and if you've got something informative to offer, they might want to read about it. So the questions are: What do you really mean by "rants"? Why are you blogging?? That's important. Would you rather have a very small amount of traffic, but people who are reading your content and into your site, or do you just want a large volume of traffic, regardless of whether they're creating a blog community? Whatever you choose, good luck to you!

I think personal rants should be okay as a way for you to express yourself. But don't expect the blog to gain a major following because like what Melody said, most people are not really interested in what you have to say - unless you're a celebrity. If getting huge traffic to your site is not your priority, then you should be fine in writing about your daily thoughts.

| I think that it would depend almost entirely on the quality of your writing. You'd have to have a very amusing, engaging writing style; purely negative rants would get boring pretty fast.

Depends... Quality of writing is important but you could be a great writer talking about boring stuff = boring... That or you could be a decent / ok / whatever writer and talk about cool / hilarious stuff = good. Know what I'm saying?

It really depends if your rants are funny or entertainning.

Calvin Trillin, for example, can make a visit to a burger joint or a street fair hilarious. Erma Bombeck wrote about housekeeping, and she was immensely popular. Bill Cosby's "Chocolate Cake For Breakfast" (spoken, not written, admittedly) is about the completely prosaic situation of cooking breakfast for the kids because his wife wasn't going to that day, and it's funny enough to laugh a person out of breath. ("Eggs! Eggs are in chocolate cake! And milk! And wheat! That's nutrition!") In fact, most standup comics are talking about the everyday and prosaic. So I'd say that it's about quality of expression, whether written, spoken, sung, drawn, whatever. The subject matters, but the subject is just barely the beginning. A great writer talking about eating a bagel is likely to be more interesting than a mediocre writer talking about the exotic adventure that won a war. Now, this is in the context of "rants" and anecdotes and comedy and similar stuff. In a textbook or other nonfiction information or analytical work, of course the content is very important. But that's a different situation. |

I write a blog about my daily life and I think it's quite popular. The thing with 'popular' though is that Bloggers rarely share stats so my idea of popular may be very different to yours. I get comments on all my posts, I get contacted by companies to do reviews and I am contacted regarding paid sponsored posts. A lot of which I turn down as they would make my blog less personal but the offers are there so my blog must be a bit popular lol. All I write about is what my family and I get up to on a daily basis, which isn't really that exciting so I think that a blog about your rants could well work if it's done in the right way. Good luck
