My personal blog started as a jewelry niche blog 2 years ago and stopped. I've begun blogging again with personal posts because I'm working on getting a book published and want a brand. While I'm doing this, I want to start a weekly blog about new design ideas found on the web. I'm so new and can't grasp the terms "SEO" and Alexa rank, etc. What are good ways for me to learn this?

Without meaning to sound facetious - it's not my intention. You are both asking one of the most basic of questions. Many of us have spent years learning what we know, and even if willing, can not pass that on in one forum post. My advice to you is go and buy a book. Remember those things - made of paper? Go to Amazon and buy something like SEO for Dummies and you'll have enough information in a few hours reading to set you off (...or if you don't mind breaking the law that book is easy enough to find and download)... Don't waste you time or money buying these "Secret report on how I got to number one in Google in 30 seconds" reports - they aren't worth the paper they're not written on....

Thanks for the tip MuttzNuttz! A book would certainly be much better than reading the tons of blogs with posts here and there. Oh, they've been very, very helpful, but I need one place to read everything. Thanks so much! |

I agree. Definitely track something down to serve as a very simple introduction. A book is a great idea; the internet is flooded with poor quality and outdated information if you don't know what you're looking for. Once you read something, start browsing blogs in your niche. Do they seem to have a large following? What do you think they are doing to attract readers? Its good to balance discussions of keywords, links and other SEO practices with real observations of practical ways to build popularity.

You don't necessarily need a book on SEO. There's a lot of free information available on the internet. But if you want to know everything that can be learned, then SEO for Dummies would probably be the best option. The "for Dummies" series is amazing (helped me get through college Philosophy ^_^), and would be worth the purchase either way.
