I highly recommend Thinktraffic.net and Copyblogger.com. These sites offer tips for new bloggers both for writing content and building traffic. Going through 1 or 2 articles are enough information to get you started and know the basics of starting a blog. All the best!

But if you want to know everything that can be learned, then SEO for Dummies would probably be the best option. The "for Dummies" series is amazing (helped me get through college Philosophy ^_^), and would be worth the purchase either way.
