I don't think the corporate sites for Blogger.com or WordPress.com have any benefits over the other, however, a self hosted WordPress site rocks. The biggest reason for using a self hosted WordPress install is because of the plugins. There are tons of developers working on cool stuff that makes WordPress the most SEO friendly platform. Not only that but there are just some cool add ons as well.

Some of the add ons are bbPress or BuddyPress. And I like the pro blogger templates that are made for WordPress better than I do those created for Blogger.

In short, Wordpress is the most widely used and (probably also) the fastest developing and most flexible blogging platform in the world.

But, you need to differentiate between Wordpress.com (free blog hosting) and Wordpress.org (software that you can install on your own server).

The main advantage of Wordpress.com over Blogger.com is the authority that comes from the wordpress.com domain. The main disadvantage is that you cannot monetize your blog.

The main advantage of Wordpress.org is that it is a very flexible content management system that can be extended with 100's of plugins, way beyond simple blogging. The main disadvantage probably is that new versions are coming out rather fast and (for security reasons) you do want to have the most up-to-date stable version installed.
