...or have you paid for a header or buttons design? I have a friend who offered to make a new header for me - she is trying to start a business - she said she'd do it for free, but I feel like I should give her something for her efforts. But I have no clue what the going rate is. I am redesigning my site slowly but surely. So what have you paid or would you pay for a new header and button?

When I was looking for a theme for my cooking blog, I was willing to pay $50 just to get what I wanted. I didn't need to in the end though. I think I would consider her time and maybe consider an hourly cost if it makes you feel better. However, since she is new at this and trying to start her business, she will probably use your new header (and website) for her own advertising. So this could be a way to say you are helping each other and let her do it for free!

I like the idea from Stacy. She could create your new header and maybe in turn you could link to her web site (if she has one) from your blog maybe saying: Header designed by ... or so. You could also offer her a testimonial which she could put on her web site. Even if she wants to do it for free I would consider giving her $10-20 if she didn't work too long and hard. Otherwise you should pay her more. But again you could pay her some money and also help promote her business through your blog.

@QuirkyMomma Does she work with 125X125 ads? I'd be curious to see some of her work. |

When I made headers and logos for people I charges $5 each. I wasn't drawing freehand though, mostly animals and abstract things.

Hi: I also suggest you pay your friend based on the hours that your friend has spent in doing that for you. With my providers, that type of job costs about $4 per hour. |

if shes new, get it for free. trade her links and help her market her new business. better yet, push her business. make a blog post thanking her.

I think you should pay her the going rate, I would guess at around $50. If she is going to make the business work she needs to understand how much money she is likely to earn. As she is a friend I would help her out by promoting her business on your blog. You could write a post about the new designer who did the header for you. Dos she have a website to showcase her talents? If so then a review and link to it would also help.
