This might be a really stupid question. I read a lot about twitter on this site and how it helps bring visitors to your site... Some of the twitter profiles i have seen have like 2k+ followers. I'm just wondering how does someone end up with lots of followers?

I just made a twitter account last week and I have one follower. Now 3 yrs from now it may be a lot higher than that, just saying it could take a lot of time.

you follow people to get more followers, and try to post interesting stuff about 70% will follow you back if you follow them, you should also follow the people that follow you if they're not spam.

I've been twittering since about late Feb this year and I have 1,100 followers. The recipe is be real and genuine. Engage others who have similar interests. Brandon is right - follow back those who are not spam. And never use twitter to spam. Use your "@" button often to see who is engaging you, and you can use the search button to try and find others who might have the same interests that you do.

Hey everybody, I just wanted to quickly add something to this conversation. Growing a twitter following isn't too difficult. So far the majority of the twitter users out there keep focus on twitter. Not too long ago in one of my blogs I talked about social media funneling, a technique I created to qualify leads and drive traffic to a site. The concept is that instead of turning half a dozen social media sites like twitter, facebook, myspace, etc into an operating site to generate sales, use them to convert traffic into qualifying leads, then direct that traffic to your own site. Twitter however does something that's pretty cool and this is how I use it for my sites. I'll use this one as an example. techdex.net - my business website. If you notice that there is a twitter app on the right side of my page. You'll find them on all of my pages and most of my service applications. This is probably the most powerful way to use twitter. Having a large following won't do you any good if you don't use it. Twitter is an information tool that you can use on your sites to make your information dynamic. I use it for newsworthy updates mostly, but I do share information, interesting articles, etc. I would highly recommend that instead of a "follow me on twitter" link on your page (which most people won't click on statistically because they're already on your site to begin with), that you use the information box to put your news, information, updates, etc in front of your visiting traffic. This becomes very, very powerful as your information now becomes dynamic and can be put in on any of your websites. My twitter following started to grow by about 5-10 people a day without me having to add anyone, post jokes and quotes or anything like that. I just follow my followers out of respect and courtesy. If you notice on my twitter site that my follower is equal to or greater than those that I follow. That is probably the best way to grow your twitter following and reciprocate traffic from twitter back to your site. The information that you post will be available to however millions of people that are on twitter actively seeking content. Also, here's a free tip for you. Use the tools at huitter.com. I use Mutuality Manual and Message Cleaner. Twitter has limits on how many people you can follow. Mutuality allows you to unfollow people that don't follow you back, and follow people that are following you. Very good service. The Message Cleaner allows you to delete all of your old messages if you happen to get a lot of direct messages like I do. Keep in mind that quality is king when posting on twitter. Don't just post good content - post good content related to what you do. That's how you qualify twitter traffic. |
