Default New article or rewrite old one

For Thanksgiving I wrote an article on foods dogs should not eat. Since I published it on Thanksgiving day, I mentioned foods that were related to the holiday.

Now that the holiday is over, I would like to make the article more appropriate for the rest of the year.

Should I rewrite the existing article, or write a new article knowing that some of the content will be the similar?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Chris

You might just copy/paste in what you need from the previous article but instead of all in a row how they are you could run them in alphabetical order. Then when someone is curious if their dog can eat a certain food they can check your list and find it easily. Another suggestion is I saw you explain the reasons why, maybe run a post on each food and a page with a list of links going to each explanation. Either way, I would try to make it reader search friendly...

If you were targeting any keywords, submit it to ezinearticles.com,articlesbase.com,ehow.com etc. Put backlinks to your blog when submitting and youll be getting linkjuice +plus traffic. Is that the kind of question you're asking?

@corcor & jaybarber1

Those are both great ideas.

I think I will make a new article, but add enough new content (and make it easy to search), so hopefully Google won't ding me for duplicate content.

I also like the article submission idea. I need to start doing that.

Thanks!
Chris

Write a new article but use what is relevant from the old article. Do not remove the old article as you will still get long tail traffic, and perhaps traffic next year.

You can always try to re-write your articles. If your targeting for keywords, then you can submit your articles to ezine and isnare.

Articles are always a good source of information that people would actually take to read and learn new things.

Goodluck on your article writing.

chardee42,

Can you (or anyone ) explain what you mean by 'so hopefully Google won't ding me for duplicate content'?

I was thinking over the year end holidays re-publishing a 2 year old series of articles so I can take some time off from blogging.

Thanks,

I have heard that Google spiders can tell if you post the exact same content more than one place. They don't like it. It cuts down on your credibility, too, because if you write more than one article on a subject (more than one DIFFERENT article), you just sound more like an expert. You won't sound like that if you just use the same article over and over.

However, you can re-do your articles to be different. You can add more sources, you can use different wording, and you can make your articles better before you submit them to another venue. Try improving your articles. Write a long and a short article, make a list on one (suggested by another reader here) or insert questions and answers into the article. AND, if you enjoy journalistic writing, putting some quotations in the article can jazz it up a lot too.

There are automatic programs out there that say they will rewrite your articles for you. But they cost money, and I have not tried them out yet. But I think if you are a good enough writer, this will be easy for you to do. Plus, machines can only do so much, AND they can make mistakes.
