Default Wordpress: Changing to Downloaded Themes

OK, I've downloaded a particular theme for my wordpress blog but I haven't been able to see how to upload it. Granted, I'm sick as a dog right now and can barely focus on the monitor but a little help would be appreciated. Thank you

If you are using a Wordpress.com blog you are out of luck. You can't upload a custom theme, you have to choose from one of the ones they provide. Wordpress.com is very feature limited because of security.

I use both wordpress and blogger but I thought wordpress was the one you could do a lot more with. What's with all those sites that say "Free Wordpress Themes" and all that?

They are free themes, but to use them you need Wordpress on your own hosted site somewhere. Nathan has already said it; if you host with Wordpress themselves, you can only use their premade themes.

Be in touch if you need help. Basically you just need to download your theme then FTP it up to the "themes" folder in WordPress. With that accomplished, you can go into your dashboard, click "Appearance," and select your new theme.

Sorry, I should have specified in more detail.

You can't use a custom theme on a free WordPress blog. WordPress is way better if you want to self-host and have your own domain. Blogger is way better if you want a free blog. The free WordPress blogs are very restrictive, and one of the restrictions is that you have to use one of a few specified themes.

"FTP it up"? Rookie here.

Nathan, yeah I got what you meant when I went back and read it again after Jane pointed it out. Thanks for clearing it up anyway though

Here is a tutorial that explains how you use a File Transfer Protocol program to install a custom theme on your server and enable that theme on your WordPress blog:
