I was just wandering if there are any best practices when it comes to the length of a blog post? I've looked at other posts and have noticed blog columns of a short width and wide spacing between lines. This gives the impression of a long post when in actual fact it's not. In comparison my posts are really long. Is this good/bad? Am I boring readers? Are short, snappy posts better?

I think the length of your posts is fine. Some people post really long posts and I just get bored reading them. Short ones make it look like you don't care much. I think you have the right idea.

As long as you add a few pictures within your posts then you'll be fine. I noticed some of the better bloggers doing this and I admit it does keep the readers interested!

Depends on your niche still, but again you don't want to overwhelm your readers by creating a 1000-word post... I mean always give them a chance to speak and share their piece...

I tend to write a few really long posts on Experiment Garden, but for my book review blog I tend to keep it less than 1000 words, but more than 400-500.

People don't have a lot of time, they don't want long posts unless they find the topic riveting. Break your text in to chunks and only write as much as you need to to convey your point.

The majority of posts so far on my site have been between 500 - 750 words. But then I do some feature posts that are around 2,000 words. I'm also doing a series on augmented reality which is split into three parts and will end up being about 5,000 or so. News posts are often between 250 - 500. I think you need a good mix of lengths, depending on content. There are some really popular blog sites which always have small posts (under 500)...although I frequent these sites for news, I rarely learn anything from them and usually leave through a link within a minute of being on the site. So it depends on what you want to go for - if you want to aggregate other content and pass people onto them then short posts are perfect. If you want to put forward your own ideas and original work, you really need more than that. I also agree with Maya - I tend to break my text into smaller paragraphs then I would were it a book or essay. This makes it easier to scan/read and more aesthetically pleasing on the screen.

I think the if you write useful information that adds value to the readers and keep them interested, then there really is no limit, although i think more then 1500 words will get them a bit bored and eventually will make them not read the whole post.

As everybody is interested in getting top rankings, perhaps the thing to do is check out the blogs that are getting top rankings for the type of posts you are making - and copy their average length No point in writing more than is necessary - but then again you don't want to write too little if it will hurt your chances of top rankings |

To my way of thinking a longer post means more keywords. However, I've heard that keyword density is just as important as the number of keywords. So most of my posts are just long enough to use the keywords a fair number of times without going overboard.
