My current theme is the only time I've ever used a theme created by someone else. I've always started with a very basic one and then tweaked everything to my liking (whether that's creating things I needed for my sidebars or turning it from a two column layout into a three column one, whatever). I really like the layout I'm currently using, though, and am happy I stumbled across it.

I just set mine up this week with blogger and I must say it was really easy and painless. I work in IT as a programmer and I still prefer blogger over setting it up myself, just far less work.

I started with a plain Blogger blog and then designed my own themes for both blogs. This involved a mixture of HTML, CSS, and XML template coding. It really helps if you can modify the XML template directly, because that is the number one way you can make your blog look different from the rest.

I find that if I design my own blog theme, I become very obsessed with perfecting the theme to my liking. So I opted to just buy one this time around.

![]() Obsessing with perfection is how you eventually get a good looking theme. But if you can buy a good quality one that isn't used by too many other blogs that's also good. Not ideal, but good.

| That's the easiest way to do it, but often it keeps your blog from standing apart as a separate brand.

I always try and design my own projects. Time crunching, but more branded, easier to work with, etc.

Yes, I designed my own blog. There's only so much personality you can put into a template. I'm still not done yet.

I've always used wp themes that were easy for me to modify to my taste. I usually do my own headers if they're an image. Graphic manipulations are fun for me.
