I have recently started up a blog about dogs, but I am wondering if perhaps I picked topic that is not specific enough. Currently I've written posts for new dog owners, picking dog names, how to stop biting, etc. My goal is to have have a blog filled with help tips, articles, stories about dogs in general. But today I was thinking if perhaps I am not targetted enough into a niche to really appeal to readers. Any thoughts? My fear is that if I were too specific then I may run out of ideas sooner then expected! |

I think it's okay - the only thing I'd recommend is maybe add personal experiences. Otherwise you might run out of topics. There are plenty of blogs like this about cats, so I don't see why a dog one wouldn't do well

What I am wondering is if I should pick a topic, say dog training for example and just write about that.

No, no, as long as the content is good. =]

Having a broad topic isn't always a bad thing. If you have a broad blog topic, that should give you more to talk about in the long run, just don't focus on a sub-topic too much if you feel you might want to keep writing about it in the future. For instance, dog training can be a subtopic of your blog, just spread out the dog training posts between other subtopics, like dog care, etc. Hope that helps :] |

I think variety is good as you'll attract all sorts of readers with interesting comments on different issues. I draft articles about almost everything that pops into my mind at the moment, and release those that are of interest to me or my readers later.

One thing that I have learned is not to limit yourself. It can make it really hard to continue your blog after six months or so when you have exhausted the main possibilities. You get tired of writing the blog, and readers get tired of reading the same old posts, on the same old topic. So just limit yourself to "dogs" for example. That gives you plenty of topic base, and its specific enough. Traffic will come later, you don't need to limit yourself to a niche, and block yourself in a corner just to try to appeal to a specific audience base. If you write for a small audience like that, then you also limit the audience. The more topic you cover, the broader the people that will be interested in your blog.

Thanks for all the replies, you guys all basically summed up what I was thinking nicely.... I think I will chug away with my original plan and try not to specialize too much!
