I've been thinking about starting my first blog, and my idea was to have some sort of weird news, facts, etc site. I am wondering if you guys think that this idea has been overplayed and doesn't offer much for uniqueness. Seems like every second article on Digg is '10 things you didn't know about....' Do you think there would be any potential to make any money off of it? As that would be my eventual goal if it ever became big enough. and btw, this is a great forum and community you guys have created. Defiantly a ton of things to learn just by browsing! Frost, the way I look at it, everything has been overplayed. It is near impossible to find a niche that is not saturated. With that being said, I feel there is always room for quality blogs in any niche. Shoud there never be another blogging tips blog because Darren and John are so successful? My advice is to go for it and make it the best you can, if you stick with it and are consistent, you will grow your readership and eventually make money.

Yea agreed with submitmyblog. Just need to type out something which you really feel and believe in. then readership will just come eventually. as long as its interesting and comes from the heart. cos i've seen blogs just for the sake of adsense and thats just no use.

| This isn't true - people don't just show up at a blog. You have to tell them about it and give them a reason to visit. My advice is to choose a subject you know and like, and try to give it your own unique perspective. For instance, I'm a coder who doesn't like jargon, and I have a blog that publishes top 10 lists of blogging tips, with a bit of humour thrown in.

Aside from quality/unique content, it will help to initially employ seo techniques, particularly around keywords to create a niche blog with money in mind. This article from seozombie might help, and the use of Google's Keyword tool to find/research popular keywords/phrases to help find if your chosen niche is popular or not...

However, having a unique perspective on your topic will help you to get regular readership. People won't subscribe if they don't see any reason to. The blog has to interest them because it is different in some important way.

Adding that kind of content when you start a blog is pretty standard. Keep in mind, any kind of original content is good content. So even if you post strange facts or funny stuff, as long as your did not copy it from another site, its goingt o help your blog. |

I think it would help to know why you are thinking about doing a blog. Is it something you care about? Are you interested in it? Do you know alot about it? Do you want to try and make a buck? No judgement about the answer to any of these, just know they will all take work. If it is about the money, you might have a hard time competing with that niche.

If its something you want to do, give it a try. I think its best to stick to blogging about something you enjoy because it will keep you wanting to post. Even though some things may seem like they are overdone, its really the writer and their writing style that draws people in.
