I never even considered money for blogging. I was surprised when I got views on my blog, let alone being paid.

My ads cover my hosting and if I'm lucky the cost of my domain name. I doubt that most people who blog for money honestly make over $5 per hour/day/month. I took most of the ads off of my site, it really looked cheap with all of the ads.

I blog because it's fun. I enjoy watching a site grow from 1 visitor a day to several hundred. Unless blogging is your job (or you earn an absurd amount of money), the revenue you gain per day probably is pocket change when compared to the money you get from working each day at your real job.
Getting money is just a bonus for covering blog related expenses ![]()

I wrote a post sort of along these lines at Bushie's Net Guide. Basically, if you do what's right by your blog and readers, then they will do right by you in return. If you try to make fast bucks all the time, you'll burn out.
Bushie’s Net Guide » If your Heart is in the right place, then so is your Head Read if you want to.

I started my blog mostly because I started having to write for work, and realized that I wasn't very good at it. That bothered me, because I used to be a decent writer. I guess writing skill, like anything, has to be used or it'll atrophy.
Another consideration is that part of my job involves evangelizing Web 2.0 functionality for my company. How could I tell clients there's value in blogging (among other things) if I don't have one myself, right? I'm not interested in monetarizing the blog per se. However, I have great hope to use it as a marketing tool for my employer. Does that count? |
