Stolen Content, What to Do

This is really a hard issue for all bloggers. I agree completely whit Nadzmc - this kind of blog will never get any validity their sole purpose is in vain.

If people are automating posts via your feeds, it might be helpful to truncate your feeds (e.g. Bloggers show first 250 words in feed).

That's terrible that people are stealing your hard work, probably for made for adsense sites

As people have commented, this is a great idea But if your links are relative paths it won't work. Do people usually use absolute paths when referring to their own site?

I find lot's of my reviews get grabbed but they always put just a paragraph or so and link back. Engines know it originated here and probably treat the culprit as a scraper so I'm not overly concerned.

I know some of my content is stolen but sometimes that goes with the territory..the only time I got real mad was when The Hockey News outright stole one of my ideas. That got pretty ugly and though I did get a free subscription for a year...it really wasn't enough. I am still waiting for one of those guys to have the guts to say what is their major malfunction with the New Jersey Devils for starters.

The problem with actually sending out the C&D emails is that splogs rarely have any valid contact details - and even if you find them with Whois research, you will hardly ever receive any reply.

In fact, when you have a relatively popular blog, your content is stolen by dozens of splogs with some leaving and new ones arriving every day - they rarely actually last long enough. So at some time I personally simply stopped giving it all the efforts I could do contact HSP and describe the situation, and ask to take some measures. What's the point if 5 new splogs will arrive tomorrow?

A lot of content that is scraped is from your RSS feed. Joost de Valk developed a plugin for Wordpress users that adds a link to your site/blog if a scraper takes your article.

The problem with such practices is that they only help you realize that your content is stolen and find where it is used. But they never help you actually solve the problem.

I did find this with Rob's review of my blog too! I also just found some that grabbed two of my pictures, but its got a link and its got my copyright on it..

Treat it as a compliment and dont get overly worried, link backs within your own posts are a help but the issue is super hard to solve and by the time you do you could have written numerous other posts and been letting them make money (if so inclined) for you..
