I think it makes your website look more professional.

Another plus is that when people bookmark your site your favicon will show there and people will recognize it as you and probably click on it more often than if you did not have one.

I make sure I make a favicon.ico for every site I manage.

Favicons help brand your site. And most new browsers will check first to see if your site has a favicon, if not, you could see 404's in your error logs.
