Tying Neckties For Dummies Are you new to wearing neckties? Although you may have grown up watching your dad tie his necktie, many men realize that they are inept pass the clip-on once the time comes for them to start dressing in formals. It’s no surprise you don’t know where to start, since there are more than 180 different ways to tie a necktie! If this simple fact astounds you, don’t let it scare you away, because there are a few of those that are easy enough for you to master. If you want to learn a simple and quick necktie knot, then you should learn the Four in hand knot. In fact, the Four in Hand necktie knot is so simple that British horsemen used to tie their scarves with one hand, while holding the reigns of four horses in the other hand. Of course, before you can start to understand how simple this technique is, you will have to learn the simple principles behind this historic but commonly used method. First you need to start by draping the necktie around your neck. Don’t worry; no one has ever strangled themselves using this knot, so you are likely not going to be the first! Standing by a mirror (watching yourself helps) make sure the thinner piece of your tie is about a foot above the wider end. Now take the wider end and pull it behind the narrow strip and out perpendicular to the thin piece. Now that you have a ‘T’ shape, bring it over the narrow strip again to make a backwards ‘T’. Now take the wider end again, and pull it through the loop left around your neck. Make sure you bring it under the tentative loop you have created. Simply bring the wider end down now and slide it under the loop you made in the center of the thinner piece. Now all you have to do is grab the knot and slide it up while holding the thinner bottom piece, and with a little fine tuning you have the perfect knot! Congratulations, you have now tied your very first necktie and escaped unscathed! |
