Referrals: Real Life Statistics - How to people get onto my blog?

I've often wondered about directories, if it is worth the time and energy to submit to them, is Google ignoring them these days?

I guess it depends how active you are in the forums of those directories. But counting on blog directories or catalogs for someone to find your blog, and to get a referral from them, is (according to me) a waste of time.

As someone earlier commented: it is the backlinks from the directories which are more important. However, you can get faster and easier backlinks commenting on 'You comment, I follow' blogs for instance.
You can get more regular traffic by building a social blogger community.

Great information, thanks for the quick response. Submitting is time consuming and I'm pretty pressed at this point so it's nice to know what to focus on.
