Google Trends and Hot Trends for Traffic

I saw somewhere people talking about how great google trends and hot trends was to get free traffic...

Basically this is google's way of telling us web citizen's what's really hot on the engines at this point in time.

Few things about using this:

a) If your site doesn't already rank well for things it could be a total waste of time.

b) If the topic has nothing to do with your niche it's totally useless and the time is better spent elsewhere.

c) If you have a good blog and something totally topical to your niche is hot it's a great opportunity.

So have you used google trends at all? If so what's your experience?
