Default Commenting on Top Commentator Blogs - Good or Bad

Hello,
I would like to know the opinion of members here, that is commenting on top commentator blogs helpful in link building. Lately I have seen a drop in my Backlinks due to commenting on top commentator blogs. I am wondering is Google not to happy with sites which use this way to build backlinks. I would like to know your views on the same.

Question for you, Eva.

Are these top commentator blogs nofollow? If they are using the top commentator plugin as a reward for commenting, then it's understandable.

If, however, they are dofollow, then that is an interesting observation. One can only wonder at Google's algorithim.

I'd be interested in hearing others thoughts on this, too.

I have no clue if it's follow or nofollow but if it was follow it would depend on the way the blog promoted it's commentator plugin.

Personally I just think it's a waste of time because you have to keep coming and commenting to keep the link there. Furthermore many reset each month.

Your best bet is to just build blogroll alliances with other people.

How many blog roll requests / trades have you sent? I know someone who had no traffic NOTHING. Built a GREAT blog asked for a link from a huge site ; got it rest is history.

I think the top commentator plugin benefits the person running it most as it encourages comments; albeit a lot of the time somewhat spammy I'm sure.

I would only do it if I thought the blog was amazing and just hadn't taken off yet. From my experience, commenting is incredibly worthwhile, even if it only gets you a nofollow link. The key is making sure that where you're commenting is some place that gets a lot of traffic, but that your comment will get a lot of visibility.

I've the best success with very specific niches, where there are very high-ranked blogs/forums, but don't get much in the way of comments. Make a quality post, and I find I'm getting even more traffic from the actual link than from searches.

Personally, I would only build up a lot of comments if I would be reading the blog anyone and I thought it was going to start getting a large amount of traffic in the near future.

I am all over commenting on other blogs, do-follow or not. The web address is there for people to click, if it's do-follow, that's just a bonus.

The social part of blogging is made possible by the comment section of a blog, use it and become part of the blogsphere

Thank you for all your replies, But I still have some more doubts. I have seen my Backlinks increase because of top c commenting and coming in the top c list. But lately I do not know is it the algorithm of google which has changed or something else that I see a drastic drop in my BL. Now I am confused as to should I continue doing it or stop it if it is giving a negative impact on my site.

Michigal : These blogs are not dofollow. The link becomes a dofollow only if the link comes in the Top C list on the homepage.

Bloggeries : Thank you for your suggestion, I shall concentrate more on building blogroll

This is one of the reasons why I removed top commentator plugin. It attracts a lot of spammers. I think it's better use commenting as a way to build social network and befriend other bloggers, not a way to get backlinks.

Sorry to disagree. but top commentator has nothing to do with the drop of your backlinks. Re-check again. Top commentator plugin is designed to give credit to bloggers who are a fan or avid visitor of a certain blog. If you comment a blog with that plugin and keep on returning to comment once there's an update and or a discussion is on-going, your link is as well as your comment are counted. So after a month, the owner can showcase the top commentors of his/her blog thus giving more promotion to the commentors on the list. So it works the other way around. You get link from the blog.

In relation to spammers, akismet is use to moderate comments to your blog. So you can avoid spams. There are other plugins that you can use to stop those spammers. All you have to do is love your blog, ensure that it is spam free. By the way, as far as i know Top Commentator plugin is just for wordpress blogs.
