I think the point is to answer questions.

I personally don't use it for link building, although I have answered a few questions.

I do it just because I might have an answer for somebody.

I've used it for a couple of months. Although I'm not getting great traffic to my blog, partly because I add links only when they're helpful, and partly because sometimes my answers are unpopular, I do have "fans" there who are watching the questions I answer, and, I assume, from time to time reading my blog. I have earned "top contributor" in two of the three categories in my profession, with "Best Answers" about 20%, and other top contributors telling people I am right. I am getting so sick of answering the same 5 questions over and over again, though!

-----

An update: I'm now up to 26% best answers, 6 fans, and "top contributor" in all three categories in my profession. I also started linking to my ehow articles and I'm getting over 100 page views a week (although I can't tell where they're from, but the most-linked ones from Yahoo answers are getting the most traffic).

I am using it too and it does gave some traffic. But as far as im concerned, I dont see the reason not to put a link on your bio. besides, the purpose of joining it is to get traffic but of as many says, you will need to make your answer related to the question. So my point is, why spend time for it if you will not put a link for traffic? just my two cents...

Do it too often and you get reported as a spammer.

Have some helpfull answers without links and you wil earn 'followers'

You don't need to put a link in every time. It's also a good place to search for topics to write about.
